Oh, Shiitake…

This is a very cute stamp set from Simon Says Stamp & CZ Design. I always enjoy Cathy’s designs, and as a fellow graphic designer, I also appreciate the typography in her word stamps and dies.

Techniques:

  • This one was designed to let a black and white stamped image stand out among among a group of mushrooms in an analogous color range. Choosing the colors from a similar color family or group (these muted warm colors) allows the bold contrast of the black and white one to have more impact.

  • My original idea was to do a stacked column of mushrooms, with the color break and lineup perpendicular how this card ended up, but the flow and variation of shapes worked better in this arrangement.

  • The mushrooms in color were stamped with ink that matched the cardstock it was stamped on, so the individual mushrooms are each monochromatic.

  • For the little grass bits I used Versamark embossing ink to stamp with for a similar effect.

  • The simplicity and subtle contrast of the black stamping on the charcoal gray cardstock continues that repetition of tone on tone color values, and also ties in the black used on the focal point mushroom. (Having elements, shapes, or colors repeat throughout a design keeps it visually cohesive.)
