Open Lattice

I saw Gina K’s Open Lattice card from last week, and then Cathy Zielske made one in a fun live with some friends, so I decided I’d create a version also. You can find links to those two videos at the bottom of this post.

As usual, I wanted to change it up a little bit and not directly copy what they’d done. I started with two colors of cardstock strips cut in 1/4” and 1/8” widths. I wanted to use mostly one color (Tidepool), but mix in a lighter and brighter one (Aqua Sky) for accent, since I planned to put a deeper color behind it.

I loosely arranged them on my mat to be sure it would work.

I knew I wanted my lattice to be on a square grid and meet at right angles. I also wanted it to be a bit offset so there was more linear open space to the top and right. I glued them all in and let them hang off, knowing I’d trim the edges.

The frame is the same Aqua Sky color as the accent strips in my lattice.

I die cut the butterflies out of white, and used a layering stencil to ink the butterflies, stamped the body and antennae, and then added a translucent sparkle paste through the stencil for the inner wings on top of the ink I’d already put down.

I used some strips of Masking Magic saved from another job to mask off the frame portion of the lattice so I could add some spray on just the lattice. (I love that I can re-use the masking strips. I just stored these on my package for next time.)

After that dried, it was all about the arrangement. I decided it needed some additional background, but I wanted it to be solid color rather than as detailed as the butterflies and lattice, so I die cut some stems and leaves out of solid cardstock to add some foundation for the butterflies. (I actually cut apart some pieces of those die cuts to position them better under the butterflies. Even from the back of the lattice, you can’t tell.)

The sentiment I stamped in black, embossed with clear, and die cut. A few blank die cut layers behind it helped it have more stability and dimension.

Thanks for taking a look!
