A Little Love for Mushrooms

While I wait for my next Concord & 9th order to arrive, I have more cards to share with the August release. This card features the Mushroom Medley stamps and dies.

Techniques:

  • I wanted a rainbow of mushrooms, but in a subtle way. This is the first card I made with the die set, so I tried to use as much of it as I reasonably could. Each mushroom is used here.

  • I made sure that the mushroom and leaf placement was not perfectly spaced, but that the overall feel felt balanced. (Notice the taller things to either side, and the embossed greetings on the opposite side from the big mushroom… those are some of the ways I created that balance.)

  • The placement of the leaf stems creates a rhythm across the card. (Rhythm is a kind of sweet spot from pattern and flow.) I didn’t do a precise alternating pattern, but by intentionally varying the angle, whether they are tall or shorter ones, and whether they are behind the mushroom stems of maybe in front of them, that’s how the rhythm (and balance).

  • Some water spritz on the background gave me a way to prinkle (and then heat) embossing powder in some areas. (Before heating it, I brushed off the embossing powder that got in places I didn’t want it.) I thought it added a bit of magical flow to and beyond the greeting.

Colors:

  • I knew I wanted the deeper green/blue background, and chose neutral colors for the mushroom stems so the colors of the mushroom caps would be the focal point. For the caps that show an accent color (which is a layer behind) I chose a deeper version of the color, or one close by on the color wheel so they acted like pairs more than separate colors.

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Wildberry, Dragonfruit, Watermelon, Poppy, Spiced Cider, Sunflower, Honeycomb, Avocado, Artichoke, Rainforest, Juniper, Peacock, Pebble, Cobblestone, and Mushroom.

  • inks: I mostly used ink left on my brushes to add some subtle shading a the bottom side of mushroom caps and stems. For the stencil background I did the same, but generally with Concord & 9th Artichoke, Peacock, and Blueberry inks.

Thank you for visiting! I hope you get some time to create something soon.
