Turtley Awesome

Combining a few products from the Honey Bee Stamps Pet-Tastic release into a fun card for my nephew. Can you make cats and dogs all in greens to create a monochromatic card? Why not…

Approach:

A fun birthday card for my nephew who just turned 9. I thought he’d enjoy all the critters in the stencil, and would enjoy the pun of the greeting.

Techniques:

  • I think this stencil is really cute, and have seen a number of cards using it. They’ve all been with a spectrum of colors though, as you might choose for the animals. Since I knew I wanted to use the Turtle sentiment, I wanted to try a more monochromatic take on the stencil, playing off that turtle/green theme.

    • I chose a range of green inks that would give me light and dark variations, but for the most part kept them toward the more yellow side of the greens.

    • I did take some time to think carefully about how I’d represent the colors in the stenciling guide all in greens, specifically which parts needed to be lighter vs. darker.

  • Choosing coordinating cardstock for the die cut turtle meant that he would work with the stenciled card panel, even though the illustration styles are different.

  • Stamping the sentiment on white gives it a nice contrast against the pattern and all the green so it stands out.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Sprout, Clover, Artichoke, Evergreen, and Rainforest.

  • inks: Concord & 9th Grasshopper, Avocado, Artichoke, Sprout, Parsley, Evergreen
