Mixing Geometric & Floral Shapes

I created this with some new-ish products I got recently. The Overlapping Geometrics stencil is one I was very excited to get and use. I thought it would be fun to layer that angular geometric background with the organic shapes of the flowers.

  • When choosing ink colors for stencils like this background of overlapping shapes, be sure that your colors will work together the way you want I kept my colors to an analogous color range. (Which are colors that are beside each other on the color wheel.)

  • I could have used the same colors for the flowers and background, and just varied lightness of the blending for variation, but sometimes it is fun to get use out of more of the range of colors I have. This also allowed me to pull in a more vibrant trio of colors on the flower petals than the background, which helps them stand out.

  • The sentiment is embossed on a colored cardstock piece that matches an ink color used in the background stencil pattern. That helps the focus be on the greeting rather than the shape around it.

  • The deeper purple ink splatter ties in the sentiment foundation with the background.

  • Using the arched die on the background frames the focal point pieces (flower and greeting) well by both shape and color contrast. The curve of the arch interrupts the angled lines leading off the card, and the bright white contrasts with the soft purple-ish layers.

  • cardstock colors: Concord & 9th Eggplant

  • ink for the flowers: Concord & 9th Dragonfruit, Briar Rose, and Sweet Pea

  • ink for leaves: Concord & 9th Eucalyptus and Tidepool

  • ink background colors: Carnation, Powder, Lilac, Fig, Eggplant
