Off the Edge with Layering Frames

I’ve had my eye on some of the layering frame dies at Honey Bee Stamps for a while. I’ve been on a bit of a spending freeze lately, but when their big sale came up at the end of the year (celebrating the sweet Queen Bee Melissa’s birthday!) I couldn’t resist any longer and took advantage of the chance to get some.

I know they are wonderful for layered backgrounds and foundations for cards, but I wanted to start out by using them as more of a focal point on their own, and in a way other than centered on the card panel.

Techniques:

  • Layering die cuts on the background card pane, in the same color, creates a pattern that adds interest and texture, but isn’t distracting from the main focal point items.

  • I used two different leaf dies from the Mini Holiday Florals. Alternating them, and arranging them all at the same angle creates a sense of movement that gives the card some energy, even though it is low contrast.

  • The frame is cut out of bold Wildberry cardstock. Running it perpendicular to the card and running it off the edge gives it some unexpected interest. Attaching it with dimensional foam strips creates dimension and shadow that really highlights the fun edge detail.

  • The flowers and stems are cut from just a few shades of cardstock, but I did a little bit of ink blending on them to add some depth.

  • By cutting the large greeting out of Dragonfruit, which is just one step away in color from the fame it is on, it allows the white embossing to really stand out with high contrast from the rest of the card.

  • A few Honey Bee Stamps pearls that are almost the same color as the frame color add another detail of texture and shine.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Wildberry, Dragonfruit, Sorbet, Grapefruit, Avocado, Artichoke.

  • ink: Concord & 9th Sorbet, Grapefruit, Avocado.

Techniques:

  • People have been asking about birthday cards for guys, so since the previous card was warm colors and flowers, I did something different for this one with some blues and greens.

  • My plan for this was to layer up some of the smaller dies in stacks of the same color, just to let the die cut details and dimension provide the variation. As I did that, I decided I wanted to add some smaller elements, so I found these Honey Bee Stamps stars and decided they were a perfect addition.

  • To add a little bit of pattern to the background, I used the Road Map stencil (and whatever blue ink was left on my blending brush from other projects) and did some ink blending there. I did take care to not add the stencil pattern where I had stamped the sentiment. (I did the sentiment first, to be sure I knew where it would be.)

  • I added some silver watercolor splatter to finish it off, and provide a touch of metallic shine.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Avocado, Juniper, Blueberry, and Harbor.

  • ink: Concord & 9th Sorbet, Grapefruit, Avocado.
