Burst of Blooms
Guest Designing for the December 2024 release from Concord & 9th
This Burst of Blooms bundle has great elements for making bouquets - on paper. Which is the best, because they last longer and need no care. You can make flat arrangements with these, or combine them with the Pop Up Burst Base Dies for something really fun.
Techniques:
I wanted to use the dimensional elements, but in a way that is visible from the front of the card.
The base of the pop-up element is cut from Eucalyptus cardstock, the same color I cut most of my leaves and stems from. This allows the base to blend in with the greenery of the bouquet. A few stems are cut from a different shade of green to provide variation.
On most of the flowers with three-part blooms (the big pink, orange, and purple blooms) I cut both petal pieces from the same color of cardstock, but brushed some ink on the larger piece of the bloom. I added the ink from the bottom upward, and in a coordinating but slightly deeper shade. (Often I will just use the ink left on my brush from a previous project.) This creates contrast between the two layers, and creates some dimension.
The “thanks” letters are staggered in their placement to complement the random feel of the floral arrangement.
I added a brushed metallic gold wrap on the base to be the vase. It adds just a touch of elegance to the card and steps it up a bit.
True, this card design isn’t great for mailing. I’d need to put it in a folded card with the flowers inside for that. But this is perfect for tucking in a gift bag or giving to someone in person. Tip: When I’ve given very dimensional cards like this before, I often put it in a cellophane treat bag, and then tie the bag at the top with a bow. It is a fun presentation that makes the recipient feel like this is truly something special for them, which it is!

Techniques:
This card was inspired by the fun shape of the leaf stem die. It creates a fun pattern, and reminds me of a pattern you might see on wallpaper. Creating it with a trio of analogous colors (adjacent/nearby on the color wheel) that are of similar value keeps the design cohesive and not too busy.
A subtle embossed background pattern provides a good foundation for the bolder pattern I created with the stems. It adds texture and pattern, but in all one color isn’t busy. Tip: When mixing patterns, the scale makes a difference. If you use a large pattern, such as the one I created with those stems, combine it with a smaller pattern. I also like to mix organic shapes with more geometric or angular patterns, which is also the case here. Those contrasts keep things interesting without fighting to fit.
I added one bloom, from deeper shades of colors used in the background pattern. An unexpected tilt adds a playful touch of fun to this symmetrical design, and seems consistent with the feel of the character of the leaves.
