Berries and Jam

Guest Designing for the December 2024 release from Concord & 9th

Aren’t these jam jars sweet? The Berries and Jam die and stamp sets come with lots of fun ways to decorate and customize the jars. Here are a few ways to use them.

Techniques:

  • My goal for this card was to do something beyond adding the jar to the card front; to make it interactive in some way. With a shape like this, adding an extra message in a flap is an easy way to do it.

  • I placed the jar die on a folded piece of Blueberry cardstock, with the top edge of the die hanging beyond fold so it wouldn’t cut the paper there. The base of the card is a standard A2 top-fold card, so there is plenty of room to write a message inside.

  • Stenciling some coordinating colors of ink (with a light hand) through the Bursting Backgrounds Turnabout floral stencil adds some nice soft detail to the oval shape I layered behind the jar.

  • I used the oval/stadium shape from the Friendly Florals die set to cut out the stenciled pattern to create a background for the jar. I also layered on a couple of horizontal stripes (Sprout and Tidepool).

  • Tip: if you do a flap detail like I did with the jar on this card, be aware that depending on where the fold/hinge is, it may need a little bit of extra space to open smoothly. My fold is a bit below the top of the jar (because I added the fabric wrap detail piece), so I used a layer of foam tape to attach the jar to the card front. That little bit of depth is enough to let it move freely.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Sprout, Tidepool, Juniper, Midnight, Blueberry, Harbor, and Powder. Neenah Solar White.

  • ink: Concord & 9th Sea Glass, Blueberry, and Powder.

Techniques:

  • This card was inspired by the fun shape of the leaf stem die. It creates a fun pattern, and reminds me of a pattern you might see on wallpaper. Creating it with a trio of analogous colors (adjacent/nearby on the color wheel) that are of similar value keeps the design cohesive and not too busy.

  • The curve on this card was created with the banner die from the Burst of Blooms die set.

  • It is always fun to mix in older sets with new ones. I punched up the color intensity with this one by adding in some bright orange slices from the Citrus Crush die set from earlier in 2024.

  • Both pieces of the orange slice are cut from the same Clementine cardstock color, but I added some Spiced Cider ink to the solid section to create a deeper color and some contract between the two sections.

  • I created some pattern continuity and flow by stamping the raspberries tone-on-tone on the front of the card as well as on the inside - especially including the section that shows to the right side of the short-cut front panel. This also creates interest as the theme continues inside, and you can see a peek of it on the front.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Wildberry, Dragonfruit, Sweet Pea, Carnation, Clementine, Artichoke, Mushroom, and Cobblestone. Neenah Solar White. Simon Says Stamp Cream.

  • ink: Concord & 9th Wildberry, Dragonfruit, and Spiced Cider.

Techniques:

  • I created two monochromatic jars for this card to use two red berry fruits from the bundle.

  • The two jars each have a fabric cover on the lids. The Berries and Jam stamp set comes with two patterns for stamping that fabric, and I used one on each of the jars here, stamping in a variation of the cardstock color for a tone-on-tone pattern

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Wildberry, Dragonfruit, Sweet Pea, Carnation, Briar Rose, Pink Lemonade, Grasshopper, Artichoke, Mushroom, and Dove.

  • ink: Concord & 9th Wildberry, Dragonfruit, Carnation.
