Birdhouse Blossoms

April 2025 Release from Concord & 9th

The Birdhouse Blossoms products are part of the April 2025 release from Concord & 9th. To see the whole new release, take a look at this link here.

I was going to create a shaped card of just the birdhouse, but realized it was smaller than what I had in mind, so I created a fold-out birdhouse on a different shaped background.

Techniques:

  • I assembled the birdhouse front panel first, using the dies, embossing folder, and some ink blending to add shadow and depth on the pieces.

  • The bird colors were chosen to look like the goldfinches I so often see in our backyard. A black alcohol ink marker was perfect for adding the black detail on the wings, and I also added some white pen on that for a more realistic pattern. A black enamel dot for the eye adds a realistic flair there, and really brings out the personality of this cardstock bird.

  • I created the folding piece (it is a Z-fold) so the birdhouse opening revealed the black color behind it when folded, and the back panel created a kind of frame or background around the birdhouse. When opened, that middle panel provides a smooth place to write - on the Harbor (light blue) side, between the front and back panels.

  • The back panel was created with a set of arch dies. I made the mistake of attaching them to the back card panel before attaching the back flap from the fold. I solved this by covering up that flap with a smaller grouping of arches that cover it, and also add a little bit of extra detail.

  • As I added leaves and and flowers to the back panel, I made sure that some of the tips would show beyond the edges of the birdhouse when it was folded up. This creates interest, and adds dynamic flow to that back panel.

  • A few enamel dots (in Artichoke, like the cardstock panel) add to the flow of the design, as well as nice touch of shine for contrast and detail.

Colors:

  • ink: Concord & 9th Brickyard, Pimento, Pistachio, Lakefront, Plumberry

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Pink Lemonade, Clementine, Sunflower, Buttercup, Grasshopper, Avocado, Artichoke, Tidepool, Harbor, Blueberry, Black.

Techniques:

  • I realized there was a birdhouse stamp perfectly sized for a tag, so I made one of those also.

  • The birdhouse in the center is stamped, but I added a die cut heart mounted with a foam square for dimension, and some detail with a white gel pen.

  • I stamped the small “Hello” with two colors of ink, inking the word one half at a time with each color.

Colors:

  • ink: Concord & 9th Dragonfruit, Pimento, Creamsicle, Starfruit, Tidepool

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Spiced Cider, Sunflower, Avocado, Blueberry, Harbor, Powder, Wheat.
