You Are My Favorite

A new release from Simon Says Stamp

The new release from Simon Says Stamp is HERE! Introducing the YOU ARE MY FAVORITE release! This release includes a lot of fun for spring, Mother’s Day, and some really good basics also. It even includes some great geometric products, which are often some of MY favorites.

This card shows off a couple of products from this release, including one of those great geometrics.

Approach:

I was very intrigued with the stencil, so I started there. I thought about ways to do a little extra with it as I was creating.

Techniques:

  • Four analogous colors were my starting point with the stencil. (Analogous colors are colors adjacent/near each other on the color wheel.) I chose to blend them from one corner to the opposite rather than straight, because it was a nicer flow with the strong linear lines in the stencil.

  • After finishing the first pass of the stencil, I wondered about rotating, flipping, or overlapping it and adding a second inking with it. I ended up flipping it over and rotating it 90° so the angled edges matched up to create a beveled corner effect. Using the same color blend means that it all flows together, but with enough variation that adds just a touch of interest.

  • Once I had the background, I was looking through the rest of the new release for what to pair with it… the organic shapes of the butterflies contrast nicely with the geometric pattern. To play up that contrast even more, I white embossed the butterflies on colored cardstock. The linework is accentuated, and the colored background grounds it nicely against that patterned background.

  • The sentiment is from the same stamp set as the butterflies. I also white embossed it for consistency, but I did it on a lighter (and therefore less contrasting) cardstock color.

  • Mounting the stenciled panel on a solid background the same color as the butterflies ties it all together.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Oceanside, Blueberry.

  • ink: Concord & 9th Sprout, Tidepool, Oceanside, Blueberry. Versamark embossing ink.
