Putting A Spin on A Summer Camp Card
A creative twist on using die sets for different results.
The cards from Jennifer McGuire’s class in Concord & 9th’s Summer Camp 2024 included a piece that spins / rotates. (If you didn’t do the camp this year, it is very similar to the function in their Over the Rooftops set.) As I made the first card, I was thinking of other sets I could do it with, and here’s where that started.
For these two cards, I used the Citrus Twist Turnabout and the Citrus Crush (stamps and die sets) from the Concord & 9th May release. I used a couple of dies from the Across the Sky class from Concord & 9th Summer Camp for the spinner, but you could make them without those. (It will just take a little more measuring and planning on your part, and a set of infinity or nesting circle dies would be very helpful.)
These two cards were made in very much the same way, with most of the same techniques. When I started I knew I had some variations I wanted to try, so you see that between the two.
Both cards started with the Citrus Twist Turnabout stamp set. (I have another card with that here.) For the Thinking of You card I stamped it on white cardstock, and Oh Hey uses a yellow Buttercup cardstock base. Both cards backgrounds were created with three rotations of the Turnabout. That is probably the amount I most often do, because I like the balance of pattern and white space, but that other linked card was two rotations. Sometimes just one is enough, or I want the full pattern of all four.
This card uses the main colors of Buttercup, Creamsicle, and Sprout on a white base.
After the Turnabout was stamped, I cut the quarter slice section I wanted to use as a window. Making it a quarter (roughly) of a circle instead of a half gave me more sections to be able to have more than 2 variations. The smaller the visible area, the less that shows at once and the more you can have hidden to selectively reveal.
I used the half-circle die from the Concord & 9th Summer Camp 2024 Across the Sky class, but I converted it into a quarter by only partially cutting it in my die cut machine. You can do this by shifting your cutting plates to only cover the part you want to cut. (Jennifer McGuire shows this often in her videos. Check her blog or YouTube channel.) I trimmed the remaining edge where I wanted it with my craft knife. If you didn’t attend camp, you can create this with a circle die, or any other shape you want the window to be. Partial cut and trim, if needed, so it works for you.
Next I cut my inner circle (the part hidden behind the window that spins) and marked it off with a ruler so I knew where to put my designs.
At this point, I was ready to add the segments to my fruit slices, but the ones in the die set are made for smaller fruits. I was flipping through my supplies to see what might work, and I found the stick die in the Sweet Summer Dies set. It has the curved end, and is about the right size. I found I could easily trim it off to create the shape I needed, and it worked great. See pictures below.
I glued those all onto the circle piece and added the sentiment that I’d stamped, and finished the front of the card! I think it is fun to be able to spin through the different fruit slice colors.
Most of the production for this one is the same as the first card. This one uses a half circle window, and therefore only has two variations on the wheel. The stamp for “Squeeze the Day” is from Summer Camp 2023, so if you’ve done that camp you may have it in your collection also. If not, there are so many great stamps in the more current sets listed in my supplies down below.
One other unexpected use: the rind in the fruit slice of this one is one of the larger rainbow dies from the Across the Sky set from Summer Camp 2024. If you don’t have that, you can create the same effect with another rainbow piece or some nesting circle dies.
Thank you for visiting! I hope you get some time to create something soon.
