Reeded Ornaments - in Two Ways

The November release from Simon Says Stamp is now available! See the whole release here. I’ll be sharing some cards with it over the next few weeks.

This post focuses on the Reeded Ornament wafer dies.

Techniques:

  • A fascinating feature of this die is that once you die cut with it, the curved lines through the middle of the ornament cut through the paper as well. This means if you curve the ornament die cut, those sections separate slightly and are easy to curve.

I played on this by adding thick foam squares under the centers of the ornaments, and gluing down the right and left sides.

  • By using a patterned iridescent silver cardstock, the fun effect of this curve and dimension, combined with the texture from those die cut details, really elevate it.

  • For the card design, I combined the shine and detail of these ornaments with some bold and bright background stripes.

  • I stamped a sentiment and embossed it in gold. This repeats the warm metallic of the matte gold cardstock that I used for the tops of the ornaments.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Concord & 9th Cranberry, Grasshopper, and Tidepool. Spellbinders Matte Gold. Hero Arts Pitch Black. Simon Says Stamp Iridescent.

Techniques:

  • Though I knew this was an ornament die, as I was cutting out shapes for the card above, I noticed the pattern and shape and realized that was very cool as a geometric element on its own.

  • The base for this card is the new A2 Mint folded card from Simon Says Stamp. I complemented that with some other cool pastel colors so the repeating background pattern stands out, but is not busy. Choosing colors of a similar value (light/dark level) really helps this work.

  • I did layer the ornaments with another of the same color behind it so there is a little more texture and shadow around them.

  • The only white touch on this card is the die cut greeting that I added. I didn’t want it to be bold and distract from the pattern, but I did want it to show against the colors and pattern created with the background.

Colors:

  • cardstock: Simon Says Stamp Mint. Concord & 9th Sea Glass, Tidepool, and Lilac.
