A few months ago I was crafting with friends and got to play with some of her dies, including the cute pies from Concord & 9th. I finally made it into a card - in my favorite flavor of pie.

If I want to make a card with Key Lime pie, what better style could there be than something with a Key West feel? I pulled together a couple of patterns that convey that feel to me. Tropical leaves, and some of that white woodwork detail - in paper form.

For my Key West style, I knew I wanted to start with the blue-green of Tidepool and some pink (Ballet Slipper and Sweet Pea), with some Sprout for the pie. The A Bit of Paradise Turnabout stamp was perfect for the main background, which I stamped in Tidepool. For some lattice-style detailing to complement that pattern, I used the Plaid Card Front Thick Die, and layered that on some Ballet Slipper cardstock.

When mixing patterns, they work best when there is some variation in scale or visual weight. These two work together because the leaf pattern is busy and detailed, while the lattice is simple and bold, so they balance each other well. In terms of color, they both include white, and just have one other color as part of it, which helps maintain that balance. (If the leaf pattern was multicolor instead of a single color, it would need to be a smaller pattern in order to no overpower the lattice below.)

I glued on the lattice layers at an angle on the stamped background, and added a strip of white cardstock along the top edge. I trimmed that whole piece to fit on an A2 base with the Tidepool cardstock creating a border around it.

The pie is made out of white, Sprout, and Wheat colored cardstock. I blended some white ink on the green for the pie to give it more of a true key lime look. I love when key lime pie is served with a drizzle of raspberry sauce or fresh berries, so I added a cute strawberry to the top by cutting along the impression from the die and tucking it in.

The Sweet Friend greeting is stamped and embossed in white on Sweet Pea cardstock (same pink as the strawberry) and backed with a couple more layers for some dimension. A few enamel dots sprinkled on in coordinating colors finish it off. Now, I’m ready for some pie.
