Inspired By: See-Through Card

This card is inspired by the recent live video from Jennifer McGuire where she created an amazing See-Through card.

I was away on a crafty retreat over the weekend and decided to make a see-through card also. I only had a limited amount of supplies with me, and also wanted to try an alternative to flowers, since that’s what she’d done. I had this fun Sweet on You stamp and die bundle with me from Concord & 9th and decided to try that.

The unique thing about the See-Through card is that the front panel is created by die cuts glued together to create the panel size. The negative spaces between the die cuts are open - and you can see through to the back panel of the card. It requires a lot of die cuts, but creates a fascinating and very tactile card.

If you want to learn how to create this, I highly recommend you watch Jennifer’s video. She creates it so you can see step-by-step, and she shares good tips along the way, as always.

I chose a selection of papers to get a few light, citrusy mood with them. The only cardstock I didn’t have on hand (or couldn’t borrow from a friend) that worked was that my orange was a little deeper than I wanted. (I’d love to know if there is a good light orange cardstock out there. Let me know if you have one!)

I solved that by using white pigment ink and blending that lightly across the die cuts from that paper. I also added a bit of that white blending on the ends of the taffy-style candies, to hint at the feel of those waxed wrappers they often have.

Because the dies I used were small, and I’d added the white detailing to some of them, I felt the background of this card front was fairly busy - in a fun way - so I didn’t want to add a greeting on top of it (or cover a lot of it up with one.) I noticed this as I was assembling so I created a space for a stamped greeting (from the same set) that fit in well with the candies.

Once the front panel was together I added the back panel in a color (Sweet Pea) that complemented the front, and added enough contrast to allow the front to be the star. This isn’t a quick card to make, but it is a lot of fun to see it come together.

Are you going to try one?
